From Algal Blooms to Data Dividends: How "Smart Lakes" Improve Water Quality

In 2014, the city of Toledo, Ohio, faced a drinking water crisis due to harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie, spurring the rise of "smart lake" projects such as the Smart Lake Erie initiative led by the Cleveland Water Alliance and the Jefferson Project on Lake George in New York. These projects utilize hundreds of sensors, buoys, and AI models to monitor water quality in real time, addressing algal blooms, road salt, and septic pollution. Ohio's H2Ohio has invested $172 million, and New York State has allocated $65 million to manage 12 lakes. The technology has already yielded results, such as predicting runoff and informing amphibian research, while making data publicly available. Experts recommend regional collaboration to scale these efforts.
